The Atlantic: Zelensky's advisors stated Ukraine's readiness to cede part of Donbas

Two advisors to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told a journalist from The Atlantic that the country may consider the possibility of relinquishing control over the eastern territories of the Donetsk region. They proposed holding a referendum on a peace agreement this spring to legitimize the withdrawal of troops. This voting could coincide with the presidential elections in Ukraine, as the advisors noted.

During the interview, Zelensky expressed agreement with this idea, emphasizing that it could help increase voter turnout and make the results less disputable for Russia. However, he stressed that achieving fair agreements with the Russian side is necessary for this to happen, adding, "I don't think we should put a bad deal to a referendum."

According to information provided by Shuster, Kyrylo Budanov, head of the president's office, is actively discussing the legal and practical aspects that would allow Ukrainian troops to leave certain areas of Donbas. One official involved in these negotiations noted that the team is approaching this task creatively, trying to find acceptable solutions for the population.

The publication emphasizes that some staff members in Zelensky's circle express concerns that the opportunity for a peace agreement may soon be exhausted. They worry that this could lead to a protracted conflict for many years to come.
