According to Zelensky, some issues regarding the peace plan are complex, especially concerning territories. He described this topic as "principled and painful" for Ukraine.
At a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the President of Ukraine noted: "We have already discussed the issues regarding territories enough. At the moment, my colleagues and I have different positions, but I hope they heard my point of view."
Moreover, the Ukrainian leader emphasized that all participants in the negotiations are set on constructive cooperation to "find solutions that will respect Ukraine's interests" and contribute to ending the conflict.
When asked whether American representatives demanded concessions from Ukraine regarding territories in favor of Russia, Zelensky replied: "I do not believe that the United States demanded anything from us." Earlier, some Western media, including AFP, reported that American negotiators in Berlin insisted on the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donetsk region.
“I consider the U.S. as our strategic partners. Therefore, I would say that we heard from the U.S. the Russian vision of the territorial issue, which we perceive as demands from the Russian Federation,” he added.
The meeting of the delegations of Ukraine and the U.S. in Berlin took place on December 14-15. It discussed the details of a plan aimed at establishing peace between Kyiv and Moscow, as well as issues of Ukraine's security. Following the meetings, the parties noted "significant progress" and assessed the negotiations as "productive."
According to reports from Western media, U.S. President Donald Trump was pleased with the outcomes of the negotiations in Berlin, and the parties were able to resolve "90% of the issues." The participants of the meeting also developed a package of security guarantees for Ukraine, similar to Article 5 of the NATO Charter.
