Cardinal Parolin clarified that the Vatican will not join the "Council of Peace" regarding Gaza due to its unique nature, which he believes does not align with the traditional approaches of other countries. "Nevertheless, we acknowledge that Italy will participate as an observer," he added.
He also noted that the Holy See received an invitation to participate in the Council last month. According to the cardinal, the Vatican "takes note" of Italy's decision but expresses concern regarding some critical aspects that require resolution. In particular, he emphasized that traditionally, international crises are resolved through the UN, and this principle is adhered to by the Holy See.
The "Council of Peace" was established as part of Donald Trump's plan to resolve the conflict in the Gaza Strip. Its formation was announced in January 2026. Invitations to the event were extended to about 60 world leaders, some of whom became founding countries. Trump became the first chairman of the new Council, and its establishment took place on January 22 in Davos.
