The Bank of England has announced plans to change the design of its banknotes, replacing historical figures with images of wild animals native to the country. This was reported by Bloomberg.

In the new version of the pound sterling, animals such as hedgehogs and badgers are likely to be depicted, while portraits of famous Britons, including Winston Churchill, will be removed from the banknotes.

This decision is the result of a public discussion involving around 44,000 citizens. Most of them expressed support for featuring images of nature on the banknotes, while historical figures received the fewest votes.

New images will appear on the reverse side of the £5, £10, £20, and £50 notes. Currently, these banknotes are adorned with portraits of well-known figures such as writer Jane Austen, artist William Turner, and mathematician Alan Turing. The front side will remain unchanged — it will still feature Charles III.
