In recent days, the lava from the volcano has reached the Indian Ocean, marking the first time this has happened in the last 19 years. Lava flows have crossed the coastal road RN2, forcing local authorities to close a section of the road and impose restrictions in the eruption zone.

Additionally, the Réunion prefecture has warned of potential risks for residents and tourists, including hazardous gases and possible air pollution. Earlier, authorities also imposed a temporary ban on the use of drones in the volcano area.

Piton de la Fournaise is considered one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. According to Copernicus data, this eruption is the second for the volcano in the current year of 2026.
