The UN Secretary-General noted that "after more than three weeks of conflict, the situation has spiraled out of control. This has become a reality that even the leaders could not have imagined. We are on the verge of a larger war, which leads to increased human suffering and deep economic upheaval on a global scale."
Guterres called on all countries involved in the conflict to return to full compliance with international law.
He pointed out the necessity of halting hostilities by the US and Israel, while recommending that Iran cease aggressive actions against neighbors not involved in the conflict.
Furthermore, the Secretary-General emphasized the importance of respecting rights and freedoms in navigation on key maritime routes, such as the Strait of Hormuz.
"The prolonged closure of this strait hinders the transportation of oil, gas, and fertilizers during a critical period of the global planting season," he added.
Recently, the US proposed a peace plan to Iran consisting of 15 points; however, Tehran responded by demanding the withdrawal of all American military bases from the Persian Gulf region.
