According to information provided by the U.S. military, the tanker was surrounded by armed boats belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). These boats threatened to board the tanker.
The situation was quickly resolved when the destroyer McFaul arrived at the scene. Under the protection of U.S. aviation, it escorted the tanker to safety, allowing the vessel to continue its journey.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key maritime route, especially in the context of oil and gas transportation. It is the only outlet from the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean. In 2024, approximately 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum products passed through this strait daily, accounting for about 20% of global consumption and more than a quarter of all maritime oil trade.
