The President of Uzbekistan approved an emergency program for air quality improvement
The document outlines key areas of environmental policy, including efficient resource use, increasing green spaces, implementing energy-saving technologies, and strict control over harmful emissions, Uzbek news sources report.
The decree also emphasizes the need to ensure stable gas supply for greenhouse farms in Tashkent and the region by the end of 2025, which includes inventorying gas networks and implementing energy-saving technologies.
Starting December 1, a ban on the sale of AI-80 gasoline will be introduced throughout the republic, which will be one of the measures to reduce emissions from vehicles.
In Tashkent, restrictions on the movement of freight transport during peak hours are planned to be implemented in December, and the list of streets where restrictions will apply will be determined by the country's Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Additionally, the decree introduces new construction standards: by March 2026, regulations for environmental activities at construction sites must be developed, including the mandatory installation of monitoring stations and online cameras, and by April, design standards for buildings considering local wind conditions.
As part of the program, a project called "Green Tashkent" is also being created: by the end of November this year, a republican working group will be formed to focus on greening and developing the urban ecosystem.
Plans include the establishment of dendrological and botanical gardens, enhancing the work of landscaping services, and introducing mandatory collegial approval for sanitary tree cutting.
Organizational changes will also affect the Ministry of Ecology, which will be transformed into an independent committee. Within this committee, an "eco-police" will be created, authorized to use physical force, and local authorities will be prohibited from issuing permits for tree cutting.
