IFJ: In 2025, 128 journalists were killed worldwide

This year has seen an increase in the number of journalist deaths

According to the International Federation of Journalists, 128 media workers were killed worldwide in 2025 as a result of violence, including 10 women. The organization expressed dissatisfaction with the authorities' inability to protect their employees, publishing the relevant statistics on its website.

The reported figures include nine cases that occurred as a result of accidents. In comparison, in 2024, according to IFJ data, the number of journalists killed was 122, of which 14 were women.

“The increase in the number of victims compared to 2024 is of greatest concern to journalists,” noted IFJ President Anthony Bellanger, commenting on the situation.

The organization also condemned the “persistent failure of authorities to ensure the safety of media workers” and called for “immediate and decisive action to end cycles of violence and impunity in 2026.”

It should be noted that the statistics presented by IFJ differ from the data collected by the organization "Reporters Without Borders" (RSF). According to their information, 67 media workers were killed in 2025 while carrying out their duties. UNESCO reports 93 fatalities.
