The initiators have sent their requests to the president, the head of the GKNB, and the chairman of the Supreme Court
A group of independent journalists has appealed to the authorities of Kyrgyzstan with a request to review the criminal cases initiated against their colleagues and civil activists. They announced this on social media.
In their appeal, the activists directed their requests to President Sadyr Japarov, head of the GKNB Jumgalbek Shabdanbekov, and chairman of the Supreme Court Mederbek Satyiev.
Considering the recent personnel changes and reorganization within the security agencies, the initiators ask to pay attention to the cases concerning representatives of civil society, activists, and journalists who have been held accountable under Article 278 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic "Organization of Mass Riots" and other articles.
In their appeal, they put forward the following demands:
- to conduct an additional review and, if there are grounds, to reconsider the judicial decisions in the cases of journalists and activists related to Article 278 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic;
- to provide a legal assessment of the legality of the sentences handed down;
- to apply the legal mechanisms for rehabilitation in case of identified violations;
- to terminate criminal prosecution in cases where there are insufficient legal grounds;
- to create legal conditions for the return of citizens who left the country due to criminal prosecution;
- to conduct an official and legal assessment of the actions of officials in cases of possible procedural violations;
- to consider the issue of compensation for damages to citizens in case of confirmed violations of their rights.
The initiators are confident that a fair and transparent consideration of these issues will help strengthen citizens' trust in state institutions and contribute to the further development of Kyrgyzstan within the framework of legality and democratic principles.
