In anticipation of International Women's Day, celebrated on March 8, Annalena Baerbock, the President of the UN General Assembly, announces the launch of a new initiative called #LikeAWoman. The goal of the campaign is to highlight the achievements of women around the world and in various fields of life.
According to information from the UN News Service, for many centuries, the expressions "like a woman" and "like a girl" have been used in a derogatory context, implying weakness or certain roles in society. However, the real achievements of women refute this myth: they demonstrate strength, successfully occupy leadership positions, and overcome numerous obstacles that men do not face.
Research shows that when women participate in peace processes, agreements become more sustainable. Furthermore, when women engage in economic activities, profit levels increase. A society in which girls and women have equal rights with boys and men becomes more stable and prosperous.
The #LikeAWoman campaign aims to rethink outdated notions by presenting inspiring stories of women from various sectors and regions who boldly overcome barriers.
In the days leading up to March 8, as well as during the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, which will take place in New York from March 9 to 19, Baerbock plans to share on her Instagram photos of successful women and their inspiring quotes.
Examples of quotes she will publish include: "I was told that women don't belong in the news department. So I took the editor-in-chief's chair"; "I was told that I couldn't reach for the stars. So I flew into space."
Annalena Baerbock has become the fifth woman in history to hold the position of President of the UN General Assembly and the first representative from Western Europe to hold this position. Previously, she served as Germany's Foreign Minister.
