According to the city administration, the freed-up territory will be used for the modernization of a nearby boiler house — solar panels and additional water tanks are planned to be installed here. There are also plans for the construction of a multi-level parking lot and landscaping of the area.
Each demolition is accompanied by promises: instead of the demolished garages, residents are promised new parking lots, parks, as well as schools and kindergartens.
The editorial team of Kaktus.media decided to remind what specific promises were made to the residents of Bishkek regarding the demolition of garages and what has actually been implemented.
First Demolition - In the Interest of the City
The first major demolition of garages in Bishkek took place in 2019. At that time, the authorities dismantled the cooperatives "Vasyuki" and "Veterans," among whose members were participants and veterans of the Great Patriotic War. These garages were located on Tugolbaya Ata Street (previously known as Lineynaya). The main reason for the demolition was stated as the design of a road along the railway tracks as part of the second phase of the "Development of the Street and Road Network of Bishkek" program.
During the demolition, other private capital objects were also affected.
As reported by the city administration, the construction of the road was hindered by a car wash, six private houses, five hotels, a non-residential building, a factory, and three garage cooperatives. However, the demolition turned out to be a challenging task: the construction documents were officially registered, and the city administration had to go to court to carry it out.
On the site of the demolished garages, a school for 1,200 students is planned to be built using funds from the republican budget. The city administration also speaks of creating a park along Patrice Lumumba Street, but the timelines for implementing these plans have not yet been determined.
