Antibiotic resistance (AMR) has emerged as one of the leading threats to global health and requires a comprehensive approach at the national level. This is the conclusion of the authors of a study published in the journal "Healthcare of Kyrgyzstan," where they analyze the current situation and propose solutions for Bishkek.

According to the study's data, the increasing proportion of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is already negatively affecting the quality of treatment and poses a threat to complex medical procedures such as surgeries and chemotherapy. International studies show that one in six confirmed bacterial infections does not respond to standard treatment, with the highest burden observed in low- and middle-income countries.

The authors emphasize that gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella, are particularly dangerous as they demonstrate high resistance to essential groups of antibiotics, including cephalosporins and carbapenems.

There is a need to develop standard laboratory methods, compile a list of priority pathogens, and create effective mechanisms for data collection and analysis.

In Bishkek, which serves as the country's main medical base, the study identified several issues, including the lack of systematic data on resistance, fragmented information between public and private laboratories, limited access for doctors to aggregated information, and insufficient connection with antibiotic stewardship and infection control programs.

As a solution, the researchers propose developing an antibiotic resistance monitoring system that will be adapted to the conditions of Kyrgyzstan and based on international standards. This includes creating a unified city database, identifying priority pathogens, and improving information exchange between medical institutions.

According to the authors, Bishkek has the potential to become a pilot project for implementing this model, which can then be expanded to other regions of the country, helping to enhance the resilience of the national healthcare system to the threat of antibiotic resistance.
