In Kyrgyzstan, Science Day is celebrated annually in November. This holiday was established on January 14, 2002, according to a government decree.

The history of science in Kyrgyzstan began in 1943 when, despite the challenging conditions of wartime, the Kyrgyz Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences was created. In December 1954, based on this branch, the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz SSR was founded, which then had 203 research staff members, of whom 12 held doctoral degrees and 83 held candidate degrees.

Since 1993, the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic has been transformed into the National Academy of Sciences, gaining the status of the main state scientific institution.

As of 2024, the academy employed 1,315 staff members, including 129 doctors and 256 candidates of sciences. Women make up about 52% of the total workforce.

In 2024, the state budget expenditures on scientific research reached 893 million soms, which is almost a 50% increase compared to 2020.

There were 68 scientific organizations operating in the republic, of which 36% belonged to the higher education sector, and 31% to the academic sector.

In 2024, about 55% of all scientific and technical work was carried out by organizations in the academic sector.

Scientific research and development involved more than 8,000 people, including scientific and pedagogical staff from higher educational institutions.

Of the employees engaged in scientific research, about 80% are researchers, among whom approximately 38% are doctors and candidates of sciences. The gender ratio is skewed in favor of women, making up about 62%.

Specialists in various sectors of the economy can enhance their qualifications and educational level in graduate and doctoral programs based on higher professional education.

In 2024, there were 2,400 graduate students in the country, with the largest numbers in medical (24%), pedagogical (16%), legal (13%), and economic (8%) fields. The number of doctoral candidates was 623, and the proportion of women among graduate students exceeded 60%, as well as among doctoral candidates.

In 2024, 591 graduate students were graduated, with the largest number belonging to pedagogical (20%), medical (15%), legal, and historical (12%) specialties.
