Translator A. Atambaev was born in the village of Tash-Moynok in the Alamidin district of the Kyrgyz SSR in a family of a collective farm worker.
In 1973, he graduated from Tash-Moynok Secondary School and enrolled in the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute (MGRI). After the second year, he transferred to the S. Ordzhonikidze Institute of National Economy and graduated from it in 1980.
Since 1980, he worked as an engineer in the Ministry of Communications of the Kyrgyz SSR, as chief engineer in the system of the Ministry of Housing and Communal Services of the republic, and from 1983, he served as a referent and assistant to the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR. In 1987, he was elected Deputy Chairman of the First May District Executive Committee of Frunze.
He has been engaged in translation work since 1975, translating from Kyrgyz to Russian. In 1982, a collection of stories by Kyrgyz prose writer E. Otuncheev titled "Golden Bell" was published in the "Soviet Writer" publishing house, translated by A. Atambaev. He has translated works by Sh. Sadybakassov, A. Jakypbekov, and others. His translations regularly appear in the republican and central periodicals.
He has been a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union since 1983 and a member of the Union of Soviet Writers since 1983.
In 1987, he was elected as a deputy of the First May District Council of People's Deputies of Frunze.
