Prose writer, essayist, translator Aitkul Ubuikeev (Kubatbek)

Prose writer, essayist, translator A. Ubuikeev was born in the village of Kerege-Tash in the present-day Ak-Suu district of the Issyk-Kul region in a poor family. In 1921, he graduated from a six-month teacher training course, and in 1937 — from higher construction courses in Moscow.

From the age of 12, he worked as a laborer for wealthy farmers. From 1921 to 1925, he worked as a teacher at the Kerege-Tash primary school. In 1926, he was elected secretary of the Komsomol committee of the Karakol canton. From 1932 to 1935 and from 1945 to 1946, he held responsible positions in the party, and from 1947 to 1955, he was the secretary of the board of the Writers' Union of Kyrgyzstan. Since 1925, A. Ubuikeev has been involved in journalism, starting his career as a literary collaborator for the newspaper "Erkin-Too." He was one of the organizers of the youth newspaper of the republic "Leninchil Zhash," serving as one of its first editors (1926). In 1930, he was appointed editor of three newspapers simultaneously: the Kyrgyz "Kyzyl Pakhtachi," the Russian "Rybachye — Pamirstroy," and the Uzbek "Kommunist." In 1937, he became the editor of the newspaper "Kommunist" and the magazine "Sotsialisttik Mal Charba." From 1955 to 1961, he was the responsible secretary, and from 1961 to 1965 — the chief editor of the magazine "Chalkan."

He began publishing in 1928. A. Ubuikeev's first literary endeavors were critical articles, after which he established himself as an author of essays, feuilletons, satirical sketches, plays, and interludes, later asserting himself as a prose writer. His most significant work is the novel "Chyr Debe" ("Hill of Discord"), published in 1974. He translated E. Krenkel's book "Camp of Papanin," published in 1940, into Kyrgyz.

A member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union since 1943, a member of the Union of Soviet Writers since 1942, and a member of the Union of Journalists of the USSR since 1930.

He was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor, medals for "Labor Distinction," "For Valor in the Great Patriotic War of 1941—1945," "For Labor Valor," and Honorary Certificates from the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR, the Central Committee of the Komsomol of Kyrgyzstan, and others.
