In the Kyrgyz Republic, a shortage of water resources may arise in 2026 due to low snow reserves, stated Janibek Kerimaliev, the First Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, at a meeting of the "Mekenchil" parliamentary group on January 30.

Deputy Aisarakan Abdibaeva raised the issue of a possible drought in 2026 and inquired about the measures planned to maintain the water balance.

In response, Kerimaliev noted that regional plans have been developed, which include the cultivation of drought-resistant crops. Methods of efficient irrigation, such as drip and sprinkler irrigation, are also planned to be implemented on lands designated by government resolution No. 309.

“After February 15, Kyrgyzhydromet will provide more accurate data, which will help better understand the situation. But even now, there is a lack of precipitation and low water levels in reservoirs, which may lead to shortages,” he added.

Aisarakan Abdibaeva also reminded about the water shortage in 2025 and asked about compensation payments to affected farmers. In response, Kerimaliev stated that there was no serious shortage during that period, and the Ministry did not receive any requests from farmers; water circulation was ensured.

The "Mekenchil" parliamentary group is studying the readiness of state bodies for conducting spring fieldwork.
