At the meeting of the Committee of the Jogorku Kenesh on Agricultural Policy, Water Resources, Subsoil Use, Ecology, and Environmental Protection on February 2, Deputy Umbetaly Kydyraiev stated that Bishkek often ranks at the top of international ratings for air pollution. He questioned why the city has been unable to shake off this negative reputation for three years: “What’s the matter? Are we lacking efforts?” the deputy clarified.

In response, Minister of Natural Resources Meder Mashiev noted that this rating is not an authoritative international source. According to him, there is only one website that hosts data from sensors measuring air pollution. “The rating is formed based on the readings of these sensors,” he added.

The minister also emphasized that over time, air quality in Bishkek has slightly improved. He pointed out that the actual conditions do not correspond to those shown by the sensors, which place Kyrgyzstan in first place for pollution. However, the problem persists. “To provide the population with reliable information, Kyrgyzhydromet is installing its own sensors to monitor air quality. In 2026, automatic stations will be installed in cities,” Mashiev reported.

Kydyraiev also expressed doubts about Bishkek being the most polluted city. He noted that from a physics and chemistry standpoint, this is impossible, considering the city’s population is 1.3 million, while other major cities have populations of around 10 million. “This should be taken into account. There may be technical errors causing public concern. We need to provide the population with accurate information,” he addressed Mashiev.
