The number of illegal dumps in Kyrgyzstan has decreased from 400 to 220 thanks to the measures taken. This was stated by the Minister of Natural Resources, Meder Mashiev, in an interview with AKIpress. He noted that work is ongoing in the country to improve and consolidate landfills for more effective waste management.

Mashiev also shared plans for improving waste management under the extended producer responsibility (EPR). "We strive for more effective waste management, especially with hazardous types," he added.

The head of the Ministry of Natural Resources mentioned the first waste incineration plant in Central Asia, located in Bishkek. Its capacity is up to 1,200 tons of waste per day, and it also generates up to 30 MW of electricity.

"Currently, the plant is already producing 28 MW and processing about 1,000 tons of waste. We have future plans: if the volume of waste increases, it may be possible to build an additional block to expand capacity," the minister noted.

With the introduction of the plant, the main waste issues in Bishkek and the Chui region have been resolved. Next year, the reclamation of the existing landfill is planned, and all waste from this region will be sent for recycling at the new plant.

Additionally, the minister spoke about new legislation regarding the restriction of plastic products. Starting January 1, 2027, there will be a complete ban on the production, sale, and free distribution of plastic bags in Kyrgyzstan. In the resort area of Issyk-Kul, restrictions will begin to take effect from 2023-2024, and fines for non-compliance with these regulations will be introduced from March 2025.

Despite the existing law, Mashiev believes there are certain difficulties. "There are issues concerning alternative products, such as paper bags. We are working together with the Ministry of Economy and other agencies to regulate this production. In our country, there are only a few factories that produce such products, and we want to establish control over imports and exports," he added.
