Wastewater treatment facilities represent one of the key environmental issues. With the increase in population in large settlements, resource consumption also rises, yet the infrastructure for wastewater treatment remains unchanged. This was stated by the Minister of Ecology, Meder Mashiyev, in an interview with AKIpress.

According to him, many treatment facilities in small towns were built back in the Soviet era.

The Ministry of Ecology created an interdepartmental working group in the fourth quarter of 2025, which monitors the condition of wastewater treatment facilities in the largest settlements of the country. In total, there are about 40 such facilities in the country.

“In district-level cities, the situation is even more complicated. Problems arise due to various water formations caused by wastewater discharges. Next year, we plan to present a concept for improving this system to the Cabinet of Ministers. The monitoring of the condition of wastewater treatment facilities has been assigned by the Cabinet leadership, and we expect to present proposals by the end of January or February 2026,” the minister added.

Meder Mashiyev also noted that the ministry intends to propose funding for the modernization of wastewater treatment facilities to the government. “Based on the results of our group's work, we will appeal to both the government and international partners and donors to secure funding for these facilities,” emphasized the Minister of Ecology.
