In order to take a comprehensive approach to the modernization of wastewater treatment facilities, the Ministry of Natural Resources has established an interagency working group that will focus on developing solutions for the construction and reconstruction of outdated facilities.

According to the press service of the ministry, one of the main tasks of the group will be the inventory and initial assessment of the effectiveness of existing treatment systems.

On November 20, the group conducted an on-site inspection of the wastewater treatment facilities of the municipal enterprise "Bishkekvodokanal," located in Bishkek. Following the inspection, the following conclusions were made:

- the treatment facilities were commissioned between 1976 and 1980;

- the design capacity is 380,000 m³ of wastewater per day;

- the actual volume of discharged wastewater averages 240,000–250,000 m³/day;

- the area of the aeration station is 51 hectares;

- the technological process includes three stages: mechanical treatment, biological treatment, and chlorination with subsequent discharge of treated water into the Chu River.

The enterprise has its own laboratory, although it is not accredited for conducting bacteriological and chemical analyses.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, the current condition of the treatment facilities is assessed as satisfactory; however, they require complete modernization.

Employees of the Department of Environmental Monitoring collected samples of wastewater before and after treatment to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment facilities.

In 2024, an agreement on public-private partnership for the project "Reconstruction and modernization of the wastewater treatment facilities of Bishkek" was signed between the Bishkek City Hall (represented by the municipal enterprise "Bishkekvodokanal") and the joint venture SFC-JV (Vietnam) — SFC Investment Development for Environment Corporation and Phu Dien Joint Stock Company.

The project involves the implementation of modern technologies, including ultraviolet disinfection and odor neutralization systems, with completion scheduled for December 2026.
