Recently, a meeting of delegations from two countries — Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan — took place in Astana, dedicated to issues of restoring cooperation in the field of hydrometeorology and data exchange regarding the status of the Kirov, Orto-Tokoy, and Toktogul reservoirs. This was reported by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

At the negotiations, the Kyrgyz side was represented by Azamat Mambetov, the First Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations, while Kazakhstan was represented by Nurlan Aldamzharov, the First Vice Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation. The meeting was held as part of the implementation of the protocol of the XIII meeting of the Intergovernmental Council of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, which took place in Astana on November 12-13, 2025.

As a result of this meeting, a cooperation program in the field of operational production activities between the RGP "Kazhydromet" and the Hydrometeorological Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan was signed for the period from 2026 to 2028.

This document implies the exchange of operational hydrological information on rivers and water bodies, forecasts of basin runoff and precipitation, as well as mutual warnings about storm conditions and joint scientific and technical activities.

“The signing of this agreement is the result of long negotiations and water diplomacy between our countries. This is an important step towards strengthening bilateral interaction, demonstrating mutual interests in the field of prevention and elimination of emergencies. The implementation of this program is aimed at increasing the effectiveness of joint activities, developing practical cooperation, and improving operational response mechanisms. The exchange of information on reservoirs is critical for ensuring the safety of the population and infrastructure in the lower reaches of transboundary rivers, especially during floods and high water periods,” emphasized Nurlan Aldamzharov, the First Vice Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation.
