The deputy noted that almost 80% of the water from reservoirs and hydropower plants goes to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan

During a meeting of the relevant committee of the Jogorku Kenesh, deputy Umbetaly Kydyraiev expressed the opinion that a significant portion of the resources coming from Kyrgyz hydropower plants and reservoirs is used by neighboring countries, leading to economic losses for Kyrgyzstan that are not compensated.

“According to the data I have studied, almost 80% of the water from our reservoirs goes to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. However, we must take into account that water bodies require constant repair, maintenance, and strengthening of dams. Our neighbors must compensate for these losses. This is a generally accepted norm recognized by international law. For example, the USA pays Canada for water, and Germany pays Sweden,” Kydyraiev stated.

In response, the Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry Bakyt Torobaev noted that Uzbekistan finances the maintenance and repair of the reservoir in Ala-Buka.

He also added that Kazakhstan is ready to support the repair of the Kirov Reservoir if necessary. Nevertheless, as the minister emphasized, President Sadyr Japarov has instructed not to request funds from neighbors for this work.

“We will carry out the necessary repair work ourselves. If our partners wish to participate in this process, we do not mind; we have the relevant agreements,” Torobaev noted.
