In Kyrgyzstan, the active implementation of the program for the import substitution of vegetable oil continues, which contributes to improving food security and increasing the share of local products in the market.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, domestic production of vegetable oil met 50% of the country's needs by the end of 2024, a significant increase from 20.2% in 2022. This progress has been made possible by the increase in the processing of oilseeds and the stabilization of the market situation.
In 2026, five new processing plants began operating in the country: one in the Issyk-Kul region, two in Naryn, and one each in Talas and Chui regions. According to the National Statistical Committee, there are 9 large and 136 small enterprises registered in the republic that are engaged in the processing of oilseeds.
From January to November 2025, domestic producers produced approximately 18,500 tons of vegetable oil. The share of domestic production reached 56.5%, which is attributed to the growth of processing capacities and a reduction in dependence on imports.
Furthermore, the ministry is actively working on the introduction of high-yield varieties of oilseeds. Trials of new varieties imported from countries such as the USA, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkey are underway. In recent years, a promising safflower variety "Petrovich," which has demonstrated stable and high production results, has been included in the state register of varieties.
Thus, the development of processing and the introduction of new varieties create favorable conditions for further increasing the production of vegetable oil in the country.
