- Measures are being taken in the Kyrgyz Republic to increase the areas under winter crops. This was announced on the radio by the head of the department for implementing decisions in crop production and horticulture at the Ministry of Agriculture, Turatbek Idrisov.

Idrisov reported that a large-scale initiative for winter crops began last year. "At the moment, we cannot fully provide ourselves with food wheat," he noted.

According to the representative of the Ministry of Agriculture, the transition to winter varieties of wheat and barley will significantly increase yields. This, in turn, will provide farmers with a larger volume of products and increase their incomes. Additionally, the growth in production contributes to enhancing the country's food security.

Idrisov also added that after the completion of the autumn harvest, farmers have a more favorable period for the sowing campaign. During this time, the use of machinery, fertilizers, and seeds significantly decreases compared to spring. "Therefore, we strongly encourage farmers to switch to winter sowing," he emphasized.

For the harvest of 2025-2026, 162 thousand hectares of winter crops have already been sown in the country, of which 152 thousand hectares are wheat and 9 thousand hectares are barley.

Of the total area, 63 thousand hectares of crops are on irrigated lands, while 83-86 thousand hectares are on rainfed (non-irrigated) areas.

"Winter crops are cultivated in six regions of the country, except for Naryn. The largest number of sowings is in the Chui region — over 40%. Following it are the Issyk-Kul, Jalal-Abad, Osh, and Batken regions," Idrisov added.
