Deputy Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic Edil Baisalov spoke at the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, taking place at the UN headquarters in New York.
In his address, he noted Kyrgyzstan's ongoing commitment to gender equality, the protection of the rights of women and girls, and the fulfillment of international obligations, including the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Baisalov emphasized that under the leadership of President Sadyr Japarov, the Kyrgyz Republic is pursuing a consistent policy aimed at strengthening the rule of law, expanding economic opportunities for women, and combating violence against them. He highlighted that Kyrgyzstan operates on the principle of zero tolerance for such crimes, and the state continues to improve legislation and protection mechanisms.
The speech also addressed issues of compliance with international law and the UN Charter, as well as the need to protect civilians, especially women and children, in the context of modern conflicts.
“It is impossible to talk about women's rights while ignoring the suffering they endure in conflict zones. The protection of women's rights must become an integral part of international security,” noted Edil Baisalov.
He added that the UN should serve as an example in matters of equality.
“After almost eight decades of existence, it is time for a woman to lead the UN as Secretary-General,” he emphasized.
The delegation of the Kyrgyz Republic, actively participating in the 70th session, includes representatives from the Supreme Court, the General Prosecutor's Office, various ministries, and the Ombudsman Institute. The delegation is actively involved in plenary sessions, thematic discussions, and a number of side events.
National events and presentations dedicated to promoting women's rights, strengthening justice, and expanding opportunities for women and girls are also planned as part of the session.
