In one of the nursing homes in Brazil, the oldest resident on Earth was unexpectedly discovered — 118-year-old Luis Carlos dos Santos. Despite his advanced age, Luis moves actively, smokes, and enjoys coffee several times a day.

According to local media, he has been living in this facility for over 50 years. After publications on social media, the organization RankBrasil took it upon themselves to verify the centenarian's documents and confirmed his age.

Luis was born on February 15, 1908, in the Brazilian city of Eloi Mendes, located in the state of Minas Gerais. He became a permanent resident of the nursing home on September 10, 1971, when a priest from the city of Tres Pontas brought him to the facility. During his time there, he has become a symbol for the staff and other residents of the home.

Documents such as an updated birth certificate, employment record, and medical reports confirm Luis's age. In the near future, the organization RankBrasil plans to officially recognize him as the oldest living person on the planet. Previously, this title belonged to 116-year-old Ethel Caterham from the United Kingdom.

Despite his 118 years, Luis remains active: he moves around independently, eats, and does not require constant medication. Every day he drinks coffee three times and continues to smoke roll-ups, which has become part of his routine. The staff of the home note that the man prefers solitude and tranquility, often spending time outdoors. His daily life includes creating and dismantling a stone path, which has become his unique symbol.
