China has converted a medium cargo ship into a combat vessel capable of carrying modern strike drones. A modular electromagnetic catapult (EMALS) has been installed on the ship, designed for launching fixed-wing drones. This information appeared in The War Zone publication, based on new photographs taken at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai.

Previously, this vessel served as an "arsenal ship," housing around 60 container launch systems, radar systems, and close-in defense systems. Within a few days, it was modified: some containers were dismantled to free up space for the catapult system and drones.

According to available data, only 24 of the 60 vertical launch cells remain on board. Nevertheless, the ship has retained the 30mm Type 1130 close-in weapon system, radar stations, and other communication and detection systems in containerized form. This allows the vessel, at least formally, to maintain its defensive capabilities.

The catapult installation is a modular system consisting of four vehicles combined into a single launch track. One of the modules has a drone ready for launch, while another drone is located on the deck behind it. The length of the catapult can vary depending on the type of the launched device and the available space, making the system mobile and versatile.

Additionally, stealthy combat drones with large wingspans resembling "loyal wingman" drones have been spotted near the vessel. It is possible that some of them are models; however, the configuration of the ship indicates the development of a concept for maritime-based unmanned aviation.
