The establishment of a copper smelting plant in Mongolia was officially announced by decree in August of last year. This project has been under discussion for 50 years, and its implementation is being handled by Byambatsogt Sandag, the Minister of Mongolia and Head of the Government Affairs.
Currently, a working group has been formed to develop the feasibility study and select a suitable plant, as well as to establish connections with leading global organizations in this field. This information was published by MiddleAsianNews.
Invitations to participate in the tender were sent to 55 companies from more than 20 countries through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia and local embassies. As a result of the first selection stage, 13 companies from 7 countries submitted their proposals for cooperation. Four of them were recognized as experienced and meeting the requirements.
In addition, at the cabinet meeting, the government was instructed to choose one of the four companies presented.
Currently, the following four companies are under consideration:
Non-ferrous Metal Industry's Foreign Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd (China)
Jiangxi Copper (China)
Shenzhen LITU New Energy Technology Co., Ltd (China)
Glencore International AG (Switzerland)
In the first quarter of this year, the government of Mongolia will select the company that will take over the management of the copper smelting plant and the ore concentrate processing plant.
“We will adhere to the policy of choosing the most experienced and technologically advanced investors, and the selection process must be transparent and fair. With the launch of the copper processing plant, we will be able to fully process the copper mined by the state-owned company 'Erdenet' and produce up to 120,000 tons of pure copper per year. It is expected that about $700 million will be invested in the project over the next two years,” noted Byambatsogt.
