“The Mongolian horse, originating from the Mongolian plateau, is considered one of the oldest horse breeds on the planet. The average height of a Mongolian horse at the withers ranges from 120 to 135 centimeters, and its weight varies from 267 to 370 kilograms,” reports MiddleAsianNews.

Although the Mongolian horse is not particularly tall, it has a strong build, high endurance, and the ability to adapt to harsh climatic conditions and prolonged keeping.

Due to its outstanding qualities, such as speed and endurance, the Mongolian horse has been an important means of transport and a military animal throughout history. It played a key role in the formation of the mighty Mongol Empire under Genghis Khan.

Horse racing on Mongolian horses is a traditional sport that is very popular among locals. It is not only a competition but also a way to preserve cultural traditions. In these competitions, riders demonstrate their horsemanship and deep connection with the animals.

According to preliminary census data expected in 2025-2026, the number of Mongolian horses in the country is about 5 million. To preserve this ancient breed, Mongolia is taking measures, including the establishment of reserves and supporting the improvement of breeding methods.

This figure shows that the number of horses in Mongolia significantly exceeds the local population, which is estimated to be around 3.6 million people. This indicates a high concentration of horses per capita in the world. Animal husbandry remains an important and developing part of Mongolia's economy and culture.

Mongolians actively use horses for herding livestock, transportation, and producing airag (fermented mare's milk).

Despite changes in the populations of other animals, the horse population remains stable and has even slightly increased in recent years.

From July 11 to 13, 2026, Mongolia will host the World Horse Day. This festival aims to promote Mongolian cultural traditions and heritage on the international stage, develop tourism, and demonstrate the cultural significance of the Mongolian horse.
