The former president of South Korea has been sentenced to life imprisonment

At the court hearing, it was established that Yoon Suk-yeol was guilty of abuse of power and incitement to rebellion. The prosecution insisted on the death penalty for the ex-president; however, Yoon denies his guilt, claiming that his actions were part of presidential powers aimed at drawing attention to the blocking of government operations by opposition forces. His lawyer stated that he plans to discuss the possibility of an appeal, considering the court's decision unjustified.

The failure of the attempt to impose martial law in South Korea at the end of 2024 led to a serious political crisis and resulted in Yoon Suk-yeol's removal from office. The resistance of parliament played a key role in this process.

A total of eight criminal cases were initiated against the former president. In January 2026, the same court sentenced Yoon Suk-yeol to five years in prison on other charges, including using security services to obstruct the execution of a court order for arrest, as well as forgery of official documents and violation of legal procedures for imposing martial law.
