
As a result of heavy rains in Juiz de Fora and Ubá in southeastern Brazil, 30 people have died and another 39 are missing. A state of emergency has been declared in the affected areas, and 440 people have been evacuated, according to Reuters.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences on the social network X, noting that authorities need to "provide humanitarian aid, restore social services, support the evacuated, and assist in recovery."
According to Reuters, Brazil traditionally experiences a rainy season from December to March, with frequent floods and landslides. However, in February 2026, the amount of precipitation in the southern and eastern states of the country significantly exceeded the norm. Juiz de Fora recorded the highest level of rainfall in its history this month.
