The competition for the construction of the first copper smelting plant in Mongolia involves a Chinese consortium made up of several companies and a Swiss firm. This was reported by MiddleAsianNews.
A report on the construction of the copper concentrate processing plant was presented by the working group to the government as part of a project to develop an industrial and technological complex being implemented by the state mining corporation "Erdenet".
The project was presented to 55 companies from over 20 countries, which are global leaders in the field of copper and metallurgy. Of these, 13 companies from seven countries expressed interest and proposed their ideas for investment and cooperation. Based on an analysis of the experience of implementing similar projects, as well as technical and economic parameters, four companies from two countries were selected, and preparations for the next stage of selection are currently underway, as reported by the Government's Media and Public Relations Department.
The finalists include: Chinese NFC, Jiangxi Copper, a consortium consisting of Liantou New Energy Technology, China ENFI Engineering Corporation, and Shanxi Northern Copper Industry, as well as Swiss Glencore International AG.
At the meeting on February 25, 2026, the Cabinet of Ministers instructed the working group to prepare documents for the selection, which will be sent to the participants who passed the preliminary selection, with the aim of evaluating the submitted materials and conducting the final selection process. Byambatsogt Sandagu, head of the Cabinet Secretariat, was tasked with organizing this work.
