The Government of Moldova has approved the country's exit from the CIS

The Government of Moldova has decided to denounce three main agreements of the CIS, including the founding agreement and the charter. In this regard, the government press service emphasized that "this decision is related to the violation by the Russian Federation of key values and principles of the community, within which states must respect each other's territorial integrity and inviolability of borders."

Moreover, this decision "reflects the new strategic priorities" of Moldova as a candidate for EU membership. Exiting the CIS will also allow the country to save 3.1 million lei ($172.8 thousand) annually from the state budget, the government added.

It should be noted that Moldova has not participated in CIS meetings since 2022. On January 19, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova initiated the procedure for denouncing three main agreements of the CIS, which is a necessary step for a complete exit from the organization. On March 4, the parliamentary committee on foreign policy approved this decision.

Within the framework of the CIS, Moldova has signed about 283 agreements, of which 71 have already been denounced, and another 60 are in the process of denouncement. The Moldovan authorities assured that exiting the CIS will not affect agreements that bring economic benefits to the country, and they will not abandon them if they do not contradict the goals of European integration.
