It was recently reported that the account of Arndt Freitag von Loringhofen, who previously held positions as deputy president of the Federal Intelligence Service of Germany (BND) and ambassador to Poland and the Czech Republic, became a victim of a fraudulent attack. This was reported by DW, citing information about the incident.
The scammers posed as trusted individuals and convinced him to enter his PIN code via the Signal messenger.
After the 69-year-old von Loringhofen complied with their request, a link to an unknown website was sent from his account to all his contacts. As a result, the former diplomat hurried to warn his acquaintances to avoid clicking on this link and then deleted his account.
According to statements from von Loringhofen and information from Der Spiegel, this incident is linked to a large-scale cyberattack organized by Russian hackers. The publication reports that as early as February, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution of Germany warned that this campaign primarily targets high-ranking officials, military personnel, and the media. Among those affected by this attack were also senior German politicians and law enforcement officials.
