Trump noted that he is not surprised, as he has always believed that NATO would not support the US. “We spend hundreds of billions of dollars every year to defend these countries, and in return, they do nothing for us, especially when the need arises,” he added.

“Thanks to our successful actions in the Middle East, we no longer need help from NATO countries — and we never did!” the president wrote.

He also emphasized that the United States “does not require help” from others.

During a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin at the White House, Trump characterized the refusal of NATO countries as “a huge folly,” according to Reuters. “Everyone agrees with us, but no one wants to help. This is something we, the United States, need to remember, because it is absolutely unacceptable,” he stated.

When asked about possible measures against NATO allies, Trump replied that he has no plans in this regard.

Earlier, Trump had expressed the possibility of the US withdrawing from NATO, but he did not touch on this topic in his comments on March 17.

On March 15, the president called on allies to help the US ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz, which is an important route for 20% of the world's oil supplies. Due to the attack by Iran, shipping in the strait is effectively blocked. In response to Trump's call, Germany and the UK stated that they do not plan to send their ships to unblock this important waterway.
