Shooting of cats in Bishkek. 'Society will not understand'

Citizens insist on a humane approach to solving the problem of stray animals

Public activist Altynbek Balabaev expressed concerns about the possible shooting of stray cats in Bishkek, reporting this to Vesti.kg. He believes that this measure will not be accepted by society.

“In our country, the majority of the population are Muslims, and cats hold special significance in Islam. Therefore, killing even stray animals is not the right solution to the problem,” Balabaev asserts.

Moreover, the activist emphasized that shooting could lead to an increase in the population of rats and other animals that may carry diseases.

“History shows that exterminating cats leads to a rise in infectious diseases, including plague. Such an attitude towards animals has never yielded good results. Instead of seeking systemic solutions, such as funding the sterilization of street cats, the authorities decided to resort to killing. This indicates a lack of scientific and moral understanding among those responsible,” he added.

It should be noted that information about the possible shooting of cats emerged during a meeting of the Bishkek City Council. In response, concerned citizens organized a petition advocating for a humane approach to stray animals.
