This year, the number of murdered environmental defenders has reached 167, according to data provided by the UN News Service. These activists are becoming victims of persecution, arrests, and even killings.

Furthermore, according to the UN, cases of detaining environmental activists have been reported in 28 countries around the world.

At the ongoing UN Climate Change Conference (COP-30) in Brazil, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ilze Brands Kehris emphasized the importance of supporting human rights defenders who fight for every person's right to a healthy environment.

“These figures are not abstract statistics; they represent real human lives that have been disrupted or changed in the struggle to protect our planet. We are not only obliged to express our gratitude to them but also to ensure their protection,” she noted.

The COP-30 conference is taking place in Brazil ten years after the adoption of the Paris Agreement, which became a significant milestone in the fight against climate change.
