The 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) is taking place in Brazil, gathering around 50,000 delegates from 190 countries. The delegation of the Kyrgyz Republic is headed by Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baisalov and the President's Special Representative for Mountain Development Dinara Kemelova, who attended the opening ceremony of the event.
Kyrgyz representatives intend to actively defend the interests of the population in mountainous areas during climate discussions and draw attention to issues related to the vulnerability of mountain ecosystems to climate change.
As a result of negotiations with the COP30 chair and other conference participants, an agreement was reached to hold multilateral consultations on the mountain agenda under the leadership of the Brazilian presidency. These consultations will allow for the voices of states and stakeholders to be heard regarding measures for the adaptation and resilience of mountain communities and ecosystems in the face of climate change.
The conference also featured a meeting between the Kyrgyz delegation and the Executive Director of the UN Climate Change Secretariat, Simon Steele, where issues of access to climate financing for mountain regions were discussed. Additionally, ideas were proposed for the establishment of a Global Center for Mountain Resilience in Bishkek. In the coming days, the Kyrgyz delegation will continue to actively participate in negotiations on mountain agenda issues at this conference.
