On the air of NTRK, Dinara Otorbaeva shared information about the Hong Kong flu, which is currently being observed in Kyrgyzstan.

According to the data from the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance Center as of November 27, 33 cases of the Hong Kong virus have been registered in Bishkek. Otorbaeva emphasized that this virus is neither new nor unique, but is one of the types of viruses that occur annually.

She explained why this virus is called "Hong Kong": "Every year, during the increase in cases of flu and ARVI, we conduct laboratory tests. Samples confirmed by the laboratory are sent to WHO reference laboratories for verification. If the virus turns out to be new, a vaccine is developed for it. For example, if a sample of a new virus is obtained from Bishkek, it may be named 'Bishkek. Influenza type A H3N2.' The name 'Hong Kong' is related to the fact that it was first registered in materials from Hong Kong," she explained.

The symptoms of the Hong Kong flu are similar to those of the regular flu and include:

“These are the main manifestations of the disease,” she added.

“People with chronic diseases and children should immediately consult a doctor at the first symptoms to avoid complications,” the doctor warned.

Otorbaeva noted that the Ministry of Health purchases flu vaccines annually. “Priority in vaccination is given to people with chronic diseases, the elderly, pregnant women, and children with weakened immune systems, as well as medical workers. This year, 64,000 doses were purchased, and vaccination was free,” she reported.

She also noted that sometimes vaccinated individuals may still get sick, but they experience the illness more mildly. “This is because various types of ARVI circulate simultaneously in the republic, and their symptoms can be similar, causing confusion,” the doctor added.

According to Otorbaeva, there is currently an increase in flu and ARVI cases, especially in Bishkek, Osh, Chui, and Issyk-Kul regions, which is associated with high population density and the active use of public transport.

“Many people believe they simply have a runny nose or sore throat and continue to visit crowded places, thereby infecting others,” she emphasized.

Nevertheless, there is no need to panic about the Hong Kong virus, as it is just one of the types of annual viruses. Maintaining immunity and following preventive measures are key to preventing the disease,” she concluded.
