According to the investigation, Kanat, posing as a law enforcement officer, blackmailed Munara, intimidating her. Her son was at that time in custody due to a criminal case that was going through the court. The accused claimed to have connections with high-ranking officials and criminal elements, asserting that if the woman did not hand over 40,000 US dollars, her son would suffer.
In May 2024, Kanat was detained while receiving part of the agreed amount — 150,000 soms. During the search, he voluntarily handed over the money.
- The Oktyabrsky District Court of Bishkek found Kanat guilty under paragraph 4 of part 2 of article 208 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic ("Extortion for the purpose of obtaining property in a large amount") and sentenced him to three years of imprisonment in a general regime correctional colony. However, he was later transferred to probation supervision for one year.
- The judicial panel on criminal cases of the Bishkek City Court reviewed the verdict, excluding probation supervision and deciding to detain Kanat in the courtroom. The rest of the verdict remained unchanged.
In conclusion, the judicial panel of the Supreme Court modified the verdict of the Bishkek City Court, determining the term of punishment considering the time spent in custody and house arrest. The rest of the decision remained unchanged, and the lawyer's cassation appeal was rejected.
