In Bishkek, the role of education in strengthening peace and preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons is being discussed

Today, a regional conference titled "Education for Peace and Security" is taking place in Bishkek, dedicated to the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education.

The event is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic in collaboration with the OSCE Program Office and the International Committee of the Red Cross in Central Asia.

Deputy Foreign Minister Asein Isaev, speaking at the conference, emphasized that disarmament and arms control issues play a key role since the founding of the United Nations in the context of preventing crises and armed conflicts.

According to him, from the very first days of its independence, Kyrgyzstan has been actively working on implementing a policy of peace and disarmament. In particular, work has been initiated with Central Asia to create a nuclear-weapon-free zone, which became the first such agreement in the Northern Hemisphere and a multilateral project encompassing all five countries in the region.

The Deputy Foreign Minister noted that the Central Asian states have voluntarily committed not to produce, acquire, or deploy nuclear weapons on their territories.

Isaev also emphasized that Kyrgyzstan actively supports non-proliferation initiatives. "The country has signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which confirms our commitment to global disarmament efforts," he added.

Isaev also reminded that in 2022, the UN General Assembly unanimously supported Kyrgyzstan's initiative to establish March 5 as the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education.

On this day, events are held in various international centers such as Vienna, Geneva, and New York, with the participation of government structures, civil society, youth, and educational institutions.

In his speech, he emphasized that education and enlightenment are crucial tools for strengthening peace and preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
