Bishkek is awaiting a large-scale renovation of green spaces

The city hall, in collaboration with the municipal enterprise "Bishkekzelenstroy" and district administrations, is launching an ambitious plan for the reconstruction and construction of public spaces. The main goal is not only to update green plantings but also to radically transform the infrastructure for recreation. In parks and squares, pedestrian paths will be repaired, modern lighting will be installed, and new leisure zones for city residents will be created. Special attention will be paid to creating a comfortable environment in residential areas, which should significantly improve the ecological situation in Bishkek.

In the Lenin district, the focus will be on popular walking areas such as the Young Guard Boulevard, Chapayev Park, and the Journalists' Alley. Plans also include the reconstruction of the square on Chortekova Street and the adjacent areas to the "Manas" cinema and the Sh. Termechikov Drama Theater. In the Pervomaisky district, the emphasis will be on central facilities, including Oak Park, Erkindik Boulevard, and Togolok Moldo Square. Additionally, the restoration of the "Fish" fountain and the creation of new leisure zones on Profsoyuznaya Street and near School No. 54 are planned.

The largest amount of work is expected in the Sverdlovsky district, where the parks "40 Years of Kyrgyzstan," "Red Builder," and "Leather Factory" will be updated. Plans also include creating new green zones in the residential areas of Ak-Bata, Dordoy, and Enesai. Landscaping will also affect the Alamedin-1 microdistrict, and a modern square will appear at the site of the former "Dan" market at the intersection of Saadaev and Kyrgyz streets. In the Oktyabrsky district, the maximum coverage of microdistricts with new squares is planned, which will be created in most residential sectors, from the 3rd to the 12th microdistrict, including Kok-Jar, Kyrman, and Tunguch.

Ecologist and urbanist Dmitry Pereyaslavsky notes that such a strategy for park development with an emphasis on walkability positively affects the quality of life and health of city residents. He emphasizes that parks should be within a 5–10 minute walk from home. A key aspect of successful landscaping will be the creation of multi-level plantings, where tall trees and shrubs will effectively trap dust, reduce noise levels, and create a comfortable microclimate.

The expansion of green spaces remains an extremely relevant task for Bishkek, especially against the backdrop of air pollution problems. During the winter months, the level of fine particulate matter PM2.5 in the capital often exceeds WHO standards many times over due to coal heating and intense traffic flow. Experts agree that systematic greening is one of the most effective ways to combat smog, allowing harmful particles to be captured and reducing summer temperatures in the city, which should ultimately make the urban environment healthier and more sustainable.
