President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin has signed decrees establishing two new commemorative days: the Day of the Languages of the Peoples of Russia and the Day of Indigenous Small-Numbered Peoples. These dates are now officially recognized.
The Day of Indigenous Small-Numbered Peoples will be celebrated every year on April 30. According to the document, the purpose of this day is to support and preserve the traditional way of life, unique culture, and crafts of indigenous peoples.
Additionally, on September 8, Russia will celebrate the Day of the Languages of the Peoples, which aims to highlight the cultural and linguistic diversity of the country.
Indigenous small-numbered peoples are ethnic groups with a population of less than 50,000 people who live in their historical territories, maintaining a traditional way of life. According to official data, there are about 315,000 representatives of such peoples in Russia. The largest group among them are the Nenets, numbering about 49,800 people, primarily residing in the Tyumen and Arkhangelsk regions.
