Prose writer, playwright Mar Baidzhiev


Prose writer and playwright M. Baidzhiev was born on March 23, 1935, in the city of Jalal-Abad in a family of civil servants.
In 1954, he graduated from Secondary School No. 24 in Frunze, and in 1960, he completed the Russian department of the philological faculty at KGU.
From 1962 to 1964, he studied at the Higher Scriptwriting Courses in Moscow.
In 1960, he was sent to the "Kyrgyzfilm" studio as a correspondent for the chronicle, later working as a senior editor in the script department, chief editor of the Ministry of Culture of the Kyrgyz SSR, and a special correspondent for "Literaturnaya Gazeta" in Kyrgyzstan.
In 1987, he was elected chairman of the Kyrgyz branch of the Lenin Children's Fund.
M. Baidzhiev is one of the few writers in the republic who writes in both Russian and Kyrgyz.
Since 1956, he has appeared as a critic and translator from Kyrgyz to Russian. His first one-act plays and stories then began to emerge.
In 1961, his first collection of satirical stories "Karakurt" ("Scorpion") was published. He is the author of several novellas, screenplays, stories, and fairy tales. In Soviet literature and abroad, M. Baidzhiev is known as a playwright. He has created a number of plays: "Matured" (1964), "Duel" (1966), "We Are Men" (1969), "A Holiday in Every Home" (1972), "The Groom and the Bride" (1978), "Ancient Tale" (1976), "On Saturday Evening" (1981), "The Last Flight" (1982), which have been successfully performed on the stages of theaters in our country and abroad. The play "Duel" has toured many theaters in our country, Bulgaria, Hungary, the GDR, Mongolia, Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Costa Rica, and others. Two operas have been created based on its plot. The writer also works productively in the field of screenwriting. His scripts have been used to make feature films such as "Descendant of the White Leopard" (1985), "Golden Autumn" (1980) at the "Kyrgyzfilm" studio; "Someone Else's Happiness" (1978), "Downpour" (1980) at "Uzbekfilm"; "The Night Before the New Year" (1982) at "Kazakh-telefilm." A number of short films have been made based on the stories of M. Baidzhiev at other studios in the country. He is the author of the program of the Kyrgyz circus "Echo of Ala-Too," which enjoys great success both in our country and abroad. M. Baidzhiev is the creator of the miniature variety theater "Keregem, Saga Aitam..." ("Kerege, I Will Tell You...") (1968, 1988) at the Toktogul Satylganov Kyrgyz State Philharmonic. Works by M. Baidzhiev have been published in the fraternal republics as well as abroad. The writer works productively in the field of translation. He has translated D. Furmanov's novel "Chapaev" into Kyrgyz, and works by K. Djantoshev, Togolok Moldo, D. Sulaymanov, and others from Kyrgyz to Russian. He actively participates in the preparation of the epic "Manas" for publication in Russian. To readers of "Pravda," "Komsomolskaya Pravda," "Literaturnaya Gazeta," and the magazine "Theater," M. Baidzhiev is known as a publicist writing about pressing contemporary issues.
