The Minister of Natural Resources, Meder Mashiev, refuted the information that Bishkek is considered one of the most polluted cities in the world during a session of the Jogorku Kenesh.

Deputy Suyunbek Omurakzov pointed out that the capital often ranks low in air quality ratings in recent years. He asked about the reliability of these assessments and what measures the authorities are taking to improve the air situation.

In response, Minister Mashiev emphasized that air pollution in the city is linked to three main factors, and work is being done to address each of them. According to him, the measures being taken are already yielding results: according to data from "Kyrgyzhydromet," there has been an improvement in air quality over the past 1-2 years.

“We do not believe that Bishkek is on the list of the most polluted cities in the world, as we do not have corresponding indicators. To increase confidence in the data, we are updating our monitoring systems. After their implementation, we will be able to rely on more accurate data,” noted Mashiev.

He also added that the new monitoring system will operate until the end of 2026.

In response to this, the deputy pointed out that in several other countries, it has been possible to reduce smog levels by 30% through greening efforts and urged attention to this experience.
