U.S. senators have reached an important bipartisan agreement that will allow for the end of the longest shutdown in the country's history, reports the BBC.

Recall that as a result of unresolved budget issues, the government of the United States remained partially closed for 40 days.

The agreement reached is the first step towards ending the shutdown. After the bill passes through the Senate, it will need to be approved in the House of Representatives and signed by President Donald Trump. This process may take several days.

Since midnight on October 1, funding for the government in the U.S. has been halted. Republicans and Democrats were unable to reach an agreement on the budget, leading to a partial shutdown of the federal government.

The term "shutdown" translates as "closure" or "halt." In a broad sense, it denotes a complete or partial cessation of work, which can relate to, for example, technology, transportation, as well as production processes, when work stops due to crisis situations.

In a political context, a shutdown refers to a temporary suspension of the work of the government and various ministries caused by the inability of Congress members to agree on a budget for the next fiscal year.
