Astana explained the traffic jams at the border with Kyrgyzstan as a fight against smuggling

Kazakhstan has provided an official comment regarding the issues with delays in freight transport at the border. In a statement published on the website of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), it is noted that the increased time for border procedures is related to targeted actions aimed at combating the illegal turnover of goods. Astana emphasizes that such measures are necessary to ensure national security and to organize the situation at the border.

According to Kazakh officials, "gray" imports cause significant harm to the economies of both countries and their international reputation. It is also highlighted that Kazakhstan seeks sincere respect for the people of Kyrgyzstan and the development of allied relations, which should not deteriorate due to anti-smuggling measures. The EEC also confirmed that the implementation of such control measures remains within the competence of national authorities and does not violate the principles of Eurasian integration.

The Kyrgyz side and experts in this field express the opinion that there is a need for digitalization of control. In Bishkek, it is stated that physical inspections prolong delivery times and lead to increased import costs. According to local media and business associations, the introduction of navigation seals should solve the problem. From February 11, 2026, it is planned to introduce mandatory navigation sealing for alcoholic and tobacco products in Kyrgyzstan, which, according to the authorities, will help speed up border crossings and increase the transparency of transportation, avoiding traffic jams.
