The Ministry of Economy and Trade of the Kyrgyz Republic commented on recent publications by foreign media that relied on data from the Brookings Institution analytical center. The agency refuted the information about a sharp increase in imports from European countries to Kyrgyzstan by thousands of percent, calling it incorrect.

In the ministry, it was noted that the actual trade turnover figures between 2019 and 2024 are significantly lower than those stated in the articles:

According to the ministry's information, the current dynamics are related to the growth of domestic demand, modernization of production capacities in the mining and energy sectors, as well as the diversification of imports of consumer goods. At the same time, the absolute volumes of foreign economic operations remain at a low level, indicating moderate scales of foreign trade.

Furthermore, the agency emphasized that Kyrgyzstan continues to adhere to the principles of transparency in data and is developing a constructive dialogue with partners from Europe.

It was previously reported that as part of a new package of sanctions against Russia, the European Union is also considering the possibility of imposing restrictions on Kyrgyz banks and regulating the supply of certain goods to the country. In particular, foreign publications mentioned data on a sharp increase in Kyrgyzstan's trade turnover with some European countries, based on analysis from the Brookings Institution. Economist Robin Brooks from this institution claims that "Kyrgyzstan has become a key point for European exports that ultimately end up in Russia."
