Regional Life: Arslan Zhantaev from Suusamyr is a descendant of famous rams and a breeder of the Arashan sheep breed.

Born in 1983 in Suusamyr, Arslan is a married father of six children — three daughters and three sons.

“Since childhood, I have been surrounded by sheep, as my father and grandfather were livestock breeders. My father raised quality rams and sheep, which farmers from neighboring villages often sought for breeding. In 2001, when we went to the summer pasture, our rams were stolen from our village, and we never found them. After that, we acquired a ram of the Arashan breed, and the results turned out to be quite promising. Since then, we have started to regularly replenish our herd and engage in breeding. In our farm, there is a son of a famous ram named 'French', a grandson of the legendary 'Sharpey', and a direct descendant of 'Blondin'. I also previously imported and crossed other outstanding rams,” Arslan shared.
Sheep and rams from his farm regularly win prizes at exhibitions.

“Last year, exhibitions of the Arashan breed began to be held in our Suusamyr Valley. I couldn’t attend the event myself, but my sheep won prizes — one of them was in the top three for height, and another for weight. This year, since the main sheep are on the summer pasture, I sent two empty sheep to the village. One of them, named 'Altyn göz', won first place among four-toothed sheep for her beauty, height, and weight. I named her that because she is missing one eye. The second sheep took second place for beauty and height, and third for weight. Later, she was sold for 2000 dollars,” he said.

Some of the sheep and rams sold from his farm have also achieved success at exhibitions in the last two years. It is nice to see that even in other farms they continue to show good results.

“I don’t know why some breed the Arashan breed. Perhaps for commercial gain. But for me, it has always been important to breed the best animals, and I will continue to strive for high-quality offspring,” noted Arslan.

Let us remind you that an exhibition of Arashan sheep took place in Suusamyr called “Aysyl Tukum Arashan 2025”.

According to the organizers, the exhibition was held at the initiative of local residents, and the Suusamyr rural administration allocated a prize fund of 50,000 soms.

A commission of five experts from the Chuy Valley was created to determine the winners.
April 2021 was a landmark month when the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of Kyrgyzstan registered a new meat-fat breed of sheep called “Arashan”.

Brief characteristics of the “Arashan” breed:

- This Kyrgyz meat-fat breed was developed from 1970 to 2021 in the country’s farms. The breed was created using Hissar rams imported from Tajikistan in 1977 and local coarse-wool ewes. Animals of the second generation that met the requirements were bred “in themselves”.

- The “Arashan” breed has excellent meat-fat qualities, a large body structure, good growth energy, and is adapted to high-altitude and valley conditions.

- The sheep have a compact body and a strong constitution with a light and sturdy skeleton.

- Rams and ewes are polled.

- The live weight of 7-8 month old lambs is 48–61 kg, while that of one-year-old young stock is 60-78 kg, and adult rams weigh 109-177 kg.

- Four genealogical lines have been formed.

According to data, there are 5,832 sheep of this breed in the republic. The approximate cost of a lamb is 1,000 dollars, and for a sheep — 5,000 dollars.
